How to choose low-calorie cocktails | Herbalife Healthy Eating Advice

Want to enjoy a cocktail and still keep your waistline in check? Here are 3 ways you can avoid empty calories

next time you go out for a cocktail.

Many popular cocktails contain more calories than a cheeseburger! Cocktails supply few nutrients and may

contribute to unwanted weight gain, if you’re drinking high calorie drinks. When it comes to cocktails, it can be

hard to know how much sugar you’re taking in and how many empty calories you could be consuming.

In this video, Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND gives you the breakdown on some popular cocktails and

things you want to avoid so that you can make informed choices on your next night out.

There are three main components that add calories to your cocktail. The first is how much alcohol is in your

drink and how strong it is. The second thing to watch out for is what mixers are in your drink. You want to avoid

mixers that are high in sugar like soda, fruit juice, and tonic water. The third thing you want to watch out for is

add-ins in the drink. Syrups and creams can boost calorie counts significantly. Now that you know what things to

watch out for here’s a look at some popular cocktails:

Piña Colada

Made with high-calorie sugary mixers and rum, a typical piña colada will cost you 640 calories! Piña coladas are

usually mixed with 2 shots of rum so the alcohol is stronger and higher in calories. This cocktail also contains

pineapple juice and two shots of coconut cream, which is rich, contains fat and sugary.

Bloody Mary

Most people would know that a bloody mary has fewer calories than a piña colada but you may not realize how

big the difference actually is. A bloody mary typically has about 8 oz. (240 milliliters) of tomato juice at only 50

calories. It’s mixed with one shot of vodka, which is about 100 calories, and the seasonings don’t add any

additional calories so the whole drink comes out to about 150 calories. That is significantly less than a piña

colada!

So remember, the next time you’re out for a cocktail check the type of alcohol it contains, how strong it is, what

mixers and add-ins are in the drink and that will help you make an informed choice.
