What's in a loaded tea? Herbalife's Mega Tea, ingredient by ingredient
A loaded tea is a large iced drink, usually 24 to 32 ounces, mixed from a few Herbalife products and water. Most are made at Herbalife Nutrition Clubs, and they come in bright colors with names like "Blue Lagoon" or "Strawberry Lemonade". "Loaded tea" isn't a Herbalife product name, and other companies use the phrase for their own drinks. Herbalife's own version is called Mega Tea.
Herbalife's Mega Tea
Herbalife sells the loaded tea as two kits:
- Mega Tea Discovery Kit: the four products in their regular sizes.
- Mega Tea On-the-Go Kit: the same four products in single-serving packs.
Both kits hold the same four products: Herbal Tea Concentrate, Liftoff, Herbal Aloe Concentrate and Herbalife SKIN Collagen Beauty Booster. Herbalife's instructions are one serving of each, mixed with water.
What goes in one, product by product
Herbal Tea Concentrate
An instant tea made from black tea, green tea and orange pekoe tea. It is the "tea" in loaded tea, and it comes in several flavors. Herbalife's label: 85 mg of caffeine per serving.
Liftoff
A fizzy energy drink tablet or powder with caffeine, guarana, ginseng and B vitamins. It is what makes a loaded tea "loaded". Herbalife's label: 75 mg of caffeine per serving.
Herbal Aloe Concentrate
An aloe vera drink that gives a loaded tea its smooth taste. Herbalife describes it as supporting healthy digestion. One serving is about half a fluid ounce, roughly three partial capfuls. No caffeine.
Collagen Beauty Booster
A collagen powder from Herbalife's SKIN line. It's in the Mega Tea kits, and many people leave it out. No caffeine.
Often added
- N-R-G Tea Select: a milder tea, about 40 mg of caffeine per serving on the label.
- H3O: Herbalife's electrolyte drink mix, for flavor and color.
- Sugar-free flavorings: these give the color and the name.
How much caffeine is in a loaded tea?
It depends on what goes in it, so add it up from the labels:
| Product | Caffeine per serving (Herbalife's label) |
|---|---|
| Herbal Tea Concentrate | 85 mg |
| Liftoff | 75 mg |
| N-R-G Tea Select | about 40 mg |
| Herbal Aloe, Collagen Beauty Booster, H3O | none listed |
A Mega Tea made the way Herbalife's kit describes is about 160 mg: one serving of Herbal Tea Concentrate and one of Liftoff. A drink with a second serving of either, or with N-R-G added, carries more. At a club, it is fair to ask what is in your drink and how many servings.
Herbalife's own label on Liftoff gives a guide: limit caffeine to 200 mg at one time and about 400 mg a day.
Who should skip it
Herbalife's labels say caffeinated products are for healthy adults and are not recommended for people who are sensitive to caffeine. If you are pregnant or nursing, have a medical condition or take medication, talk to a health care professional before you use them. A loaded tea is not a drink for children or teenagers.
Make your own at home
Mixing one at home lets you choose exactly what goes in, and the products last for weeks of drinks.
- Fill a large cup (24 to 32 oz) with ice.
- Mix one serving of Herbal Tea Concentrate in a little warm water so it dissolves. Pour it over the ice.
- Add one serving of Herbal Aloe Concentrate.
- Add one serving of Liftoff if you want the energy drink. Leave it out for a lighter tea.
- Top up with cold water. Add a sugar-free flavoring or a flavored tea concentrate to taste.
Keep to one serving of each product until you know how the caffeine suits you. More recipes are coming to this section.
Where to get the ingredients
Herbalife products are sold through independent Herbalife distributors, not in shops. A distributor can help you choose flavors and order the products for delivery to your home. They will also tell you what's in the drinks you like at a club, so you can make them yourself. Ask one near you below.
