Fare o no uno spuntino prima di andare a letto dipende dall'abitudine.

Good night's rest should be one of the easiest and most natural things to do. But a busy life and hectic schedules make us less likely to eat properly and poor eating habits can prevent us from getting a good quality sleep.

"When we are busy, we tend to eat less than we should during the day so much more than we need in the evening. This is exactly the opposite of what we should do," says Luigi Gratton, Vice President and Head of Training Nutrition Herbalife.

Gratton suggests the importance of being aware of how certain foods can affect our type of sleep. Foods rich in protein stimulate the production of chemicals in the brain that keep us in a state of alert as heavy meals just before bedtime can lead to indigestion and heartburn - a perfect match to keep us awake until late at night.

Meals low in fat or carbohydrate rich meals are digested more quickly and stimulate the production of various chemicals in the brain that help relaxation and facilitate sleep. So it is better to opt for a breakfast and a lunch high in protein to stay awake and lucid throughout the day and keep the carbs at dinner.

Caffeine is a stimulant and if you're like most people, drinking coffee before going to sleep is probably unwise. Both caffeine and alcohol can disrupt sleep; you might be able to fall asleep, but not for long. This makes it difficult to reach the deeper and more restful sleep stage . So even if you manage to sleep eight hours, you still feel tired in the morning. Since caffeine and alcohol act as diuretics, there is also the inconvenience of having to get up at night to go to the bathroom.

Having or not a snack before going to bed depends on the custom. If the dinner was poor, light and eaten early, low-calorie snack is fine if you feel hungry, it can help you sleep and you can afford a few extra calories. Calcium-rich foods such as milk and yogurt are good choices, since calcium helps muscles to relax.

The good diet that promotes good sleep:

  •     Use a light dinner, based on salad, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes

  •     A bowl of lentil soup with salad and then fruit for dessert

  •     If you know that caffeine keeps you awake, avoid caffeine-containing beverages for 6-8 hours before going to bed

  •     Do not overdo it with alcohol to prevent sleep disorders

  •     Drink most liquids during the day and reduce them after dinner. If you need to take medication before bed, use only a small amount of water

  •     If you have a snack before going to bed, include foods rich in calcium to induce muscle relaxation

  •     A cup of warm milk is a centuries-old remedy for insomnia.

Following the above tips to get a restful night's sleep is crucial for a healthy lifestyle.
