Acqua: cura e prevenzione della disidratazione, acqua e sali minerali - Water: treatment and prevention of dehydration, water and mineral salts

English version follows (segue versione inglese)

The ideal drink for anyone is water. You begin to feel the sense of thirst when there is a loss of about 1% of body weight. Losses of water equal to 10 % of the body's lead to inability of organizational physical activities .

The loss of fluids causes dehydratation and lucidity lose, while the mineral deficiency can cause muscle weakness and cramps.

Free or linked with other molecules , water has different biological functions :

  •     participates in the digestive phenomena facilitating the transit and the smooth flow of chyme through the gastro-intestinal tract until the nutrients in solution pass through the intestinal wall and conveyed to the blood and lymph.

  •     is the medium in which there are the metabolic reactions ; once metabolism occurred blood, which contains about 92 % water, carries the catabolic waste products from the cells to organisms deputies excretion : kidneys , lungs, skin.

  •     allows the passage of substances from the cells to the intracellular spaces and to the vessels and vice versa.

  •     helps to regulate body temperature through perspiration and water vapor eliminated through the lungs.

  •     Sweating is a fundamental response of exercise ; thus in fact remove the excess heat produced by the muscles in order to maintain a constant body temperature . Sweat is made up of water and electrolytes ( sodium, chloride , potassium, magnesium) . The amount of salts present in the sweat is always less than that contained in an equal volume of plasma.

  •     Therefore through perspiration the body loses excess water compared to the loss of salts. The sweating, in extreme cases , can lead to a state of dehydration.

  •     Exposure to heat causes an increase of sweating, therefore the loss of water and salts is greater if the work is carried out in high temperature environment ; if the job is done for a long time in a hot environment , it may cause loss of significant quantities of salts .

  •     Dehydration also causes always a decrease in physical performance . A loss of one and a half liters of water is already a potentially dangerous. More losses are definitely more disturbing becouse they can manifest the typical signs of a heat stroke (irritability and disorientation, and later cardiovascular collapse and loss of consciousness) .

  •     The body is still able to acclimate to the heat ; in a few days there is a process of adaptation that is a prevention to dehydration. In particular, a person acclimatized , produces more dilute sweat , that saves salts . A person following a balanced diet normally introduces an amount of water and salts sufficient to cover its needs . In the hot season it is important to increase the introduction of liquid directly in the form of drinks , both in the form of feed water . It is useful to increase the consumption of vegetables and fruit , as such or as broths, or as juices, which do not have a substantial caloric content , but which are a source of water and salts .

  •     Basic norm is never limit the water supply (perhaps in order not to sweat ) preventing thirst. Its appearance is sign of lack of water , but especially of altered relationship between water and salts : it is therefore a sign of imbalance . In the summer, in the presence of even moderate physical activity should be administered liquid , in small doses and at short intervals . In this way you prevent or contain a lot of the risk of dehydration .

  •     In conclusion, the best way to prevent dehydration is the intake of proper nutrition, that is, with a fair supply of water and mineral salts. It is also useful to establish the practice of correcting losses as they occur , whenever this is possible. Finally, the correction of deficiencies is essential but it must not be understood in general as an urgent response, ie total recovery in a very short time . The optimum recovery is achieved by allowing to operate the physiological mechanisms of compensation , providing them with the necessary substrates

Important minerals are sodium, calcium, potassium ( regulates the excitability of the muscle membrane ) and magnesium ( needed for muscle contraction ) .

For proper hydration then you have to drink 2 liters of water a day or more during the holiday season , and restore the mineral salts lost. A good supplement calcium , magnesium , potassium , iron and vitamin C is the Mineral Complex .
