Jimmy John's Breakdown

If you've ever experienced Jimmy John's, home of the world's greatest gourmet sandwich, you've probably enjoyed it.  I even find myself craving a sandwich from there every once in a while ...

Problem is those sandwiches may seem healthy with all their sprouts and lettuce spilling out, but they are however, quite the opposite.  So, not to ruin your fun, but I've broken down the most popular Jimmy John's sandwiches for you in this breakdown.

#4 Turkey Tom:  554 calories, 26g fat, 53g carbs, 1341mg sodium
#5 Billy Club:  909 calories, 44g fat, 75g carbs, 2326mg sodium
#9 Italian Night Club:  1017 calories, 57g fat, 76g carbs, 2556mg sodium
#12 Beach Club:  838 calories, 41g fat, 76g carbs, 1666mg sodium
#13 Veggie Club:  1141 calories, 70g fat, 78g carbs, 1779mg sodium

*All sandwiches are calculated with french bread as that is JJ's standard bread on all sandwiches.

Yikes!  Can't live without a Jimmy John's fix but want to know how to make it healthier?  Then

Customize your sammy.  Each of the following items add the following amount of calories.  Also, there is an option to "unwich" a sandwich and use a lettuce wrap rather than bread.

Slice of Provolone Cheese:  121 calories
Mayo:  228 calories
French Bread:  250 calories
7-Grain Wheat Bread:  388 calories
Lettuce Wrap:  11 calories

Fit's Tip:  Personally I would get the Turkey Tom with no mayo, which would give me only 326 calories rather than the whopping 554.  Go the distance and get a Turkey Tom Unwich and feel free to add on a cookie and/or chips.

Sunspire Organic Chocolate Chips

Who doesn't love to eat warm gooey chocolate chips right out of the oven?  Now you can feel good knowing that your morsels are made with organic chocolate.

Sunspire Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips are made with premium organic chocolate that is grown, harvested and produced using fair labor practices and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

The cocoa for their chocolate chips is grown in the tropics of Central and South America.  It's blended, roasted, and stone ground, then cured in real vanilla.  That's the secret to getting the smooth and rich chocolate taste that is Sunspire's signature.

They're made with real organic vanilla and organic sugar to produce a chocolate chip that rivals the top grocery store brands in both flavor and baking performance — no joke!  Plus they're dairy free (great if you're lactose intolerant or vegan) and they have 1/2 the fat of Nestle's.

Here's how they compare nutritionally to Nestle's Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels.  You better be sitting because there's a HUGE difference.  Want to see what I mean, then

Sunspire:  2 tbsp serving size, 70 calories, 4g total fat, 2.5g saturated fat, 0mg cholesterol, 0mg sodium, 10g carbs, 1g fiber, 8g sugars, 1g protein
Nestle's:  2 tbsp serving size, 140 calories, 8g total fat, 5g saturated fat, 5mg cholesterol, 0mg sodium, 18g carbs, 1g fiber, 186 sugars, 1g protein

Fit's tip:  Just because you baked them and you know they are trans-fat free doesn't mean you can throw the mantra "Everything in moderation" out the window.  Unless, I guess, this is your Oscar Wilde moment for the week.

And You Thought Your Dog Made You Feel Guilty: mypetfat

I've seen a lot of diet tricks in my day, but nothing compares to carrying a chunk of fat around with you to remind yourself how much that twinkie really means to you.  Let me explain ...

Mypetfat is a way to increase your own accountability and consciousness.  The basic principal is that by carrying around mypetfat, you will have a visual reminder of the results from what you are putting into your body.  Jay, the mastermind behind mypetfat, says that, "Calories only count once they cross the lips."  So, the ultimate key is by stopping the calories from making it past your lips.  You can get it in three sizes:  1 oz (220 calories), 1 lb (3,500 calories) and 5 lbs (17,500 calories).  You can take it with you to restaurants, to ball games or even just keep it at home in the pantry to stop mindless snacking.  I've got one sitting here on my desk right now, and I've got to say, it's pretty motivating when four o'clock rolls around and I am looking through my snack drawer.  If nothing else, it's a great conversation piece.

What's more, mypetfat is offering you, my fabulous FitSugar reader, a 50% discount on some products online at mypetfat.com:

  • To get $10.00 off a mini mypetfat, which is a one ounce anatomically correct replica of body fat — Just enter FIT [case sensitive] into the coupon box after and then hit apply coupon.
  • To get $10.00 off the "1/2 is more" ebook, which is a reminder that inspires you to start enjoying eating again and in doing so, not only will it affect your waist in a positive way, but your wallet as well — Just enter SUGAR [case sensitive] into the coupon box and then hit apply coupon.

Enjoy — After all this could be the only pet you've had that won't pee on the floor when you leave it alone for too long.

Soy Yogurt v. Cow's Milk Yogurt

OK, so I already told you the unpleasant news that eating dairy can cause acne.  So what's a yogurt lover to do?

You've got to give soy yogurt a try.  My fave is made by Whole Soy & Co.  They take soymilk (made from whole organic soybeans) and culture it with vegan cultures including L. Acidophilus and B. Bifidum.  It's creamy and very much like cow's milk yogurt, but has all the benefits of soy protein, with no cholesterol.

You can try Whole Soy yogurt in 11 delicious flavors:  Plain, Peach, Vanilla, Strawberry, Raspberry, Cherry, Lemon, Blueberry, Apricot Mango, Strawberry Banana, and Mixed Berry.

I think it is worthwhile to compare soy yogurt with cow's milk yogurt.  Here's the nutritional info:

6 oz Whole Soy & Co. Vanilla:  150 calories, 3g fat, 0mg cholesterol, 25mg sodium, 28g carbs, 2g fiber, 12g sugar, 6g protein, 30% calcium

6 oz Fat Free Stonyfield Farms French Vanilla:  140 calories, 0g fat, 0mg cholesterol, 110mg sodium, 28g carbs, 2g fiber, 25g sugar, 7g protein, 35% calcium

6 oz LowFat Stonyfield Farms Vanilla:  140 calories, 1.5g fat, 5mg cholesterol, 100mg sodium, 25g carbs, 2g fiber, 23g sugar, 7g protein, 30% calcium

6 oz Whole Milk Stonyfield Farms Vanilla:  190 calories, 6g fat, 25mg cholesterol, 100mg sodium, 27g carbs, 3g fiber, 24g sugar, 6g protein, 25% calcium
