Slow and Steady Wins the Fit Race

You've probably heard that when it comes to eating, you should slow down.  For whatever reason we tend to gobble our food down as fast as we can.  In reality, if you are trying to lose a few pounds you may want to slow it down.

According to recent studies on eating habits, women took in about 70 fewer calories when they were told to take their time eating, compared to when they wolfed down the meal as quickly as possible.  What's more?  The women in the study claimed to enjoy the meal more when eating slowly.

Seems simple to me — Eat slower, gain less and enjoy more.

What is the deal with: Chewing Gum

I love gum.  I always have.  I had a gum ball machine in my bedroom until I went to college.  There's been some questions recently if gum is a good idea if you are watching your caloric intake.  Well the answer is a mixed bag.

The good news is a piece of sugarless gum is a great alternative when you are craving a high caloric snack.  It will satisfy your sweet tooth and occupy your brain until it moves onto the next subject.

The bad news is chewing gum does stimulate gastric juices of the stomach, priming it for digestion.  Which in turn can make you hungry.

Fit's Tip:  If you're craving a piece of Devil's Food cake after a nice meal, chew some gum instead.

FIT Calculator: BMI

Ever heard of BMI?  No not the music organization.  BMI stands for Body Mass Index and it is a simple measurement of body fat based on height and weight.  If your not sure what yours is, use this handy BMI calculator.

Basically it’s a quick way to check in on your health and body in terms of weight.  Just want to remind you that a healthy attitude about your body is just as important as physical fitness.  I don't want to cause any unhealthy anxiety about having the perfect body.  This is simply a tool.

I also want to let you know that there are limitations to the index.  It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build since muscle weighs more than fat.  Plus, it can underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
