What's the Deal with: Volumetrics

If given the choice between eating more and eating less, which would you choose?

If you chose eating more then you're not alone and you may want to consider The Volumetrics Eating Plan.  The basis behind Volumetrics is feeling full and satisfied.  The book's author, Barbara Rolls, PhD, believes that people feel full because of the amount of food they eat — not because of the number of calories or the grams of fat, protein, or carbs.  The trick to the Volumetrics Diet is to fill up on foods that aren't full of calories.  In some cases (especially of those of us who have been crash dieting for years now), following Volumetrics will actually allow you to slim down while eating more, not less than you do now.

The one major rule of Volumetrics is that you need to keep a watch out for Energy Density, which is the number of calories in a specified amount, in foods.  The less energy dense a food is (like veggies and non-fat milk) the more you can have of it.  The more energy dense a food is, like cookies, the less you can have of it.  As you can imagine, water (perhaps the least energy dense food there is) plays a big role in Volumetrics.

Lower-calories, lower-fat, and lots of vegetables and fruits ... hmm just sounds to me like another way (one that sells books) to describe a healthy diet, so if it sounds like a good deal to you, then you should absolutely try this diet.

Buy The Volumetrics Eating Plan on Amazon.com for $17.13.

Diet Soda Makes You Fat

Most people drink diet soda because they are watching their weight, which means counting calories and fat grams.  Makes sense, right?

Wrong!  Recent research shows that the more diet soda people drink, the more weight they gain.  Researchers are not exactly sure why this occurs, but fingers are being pointed at the fact that people consciously eat more if they drink diet soda because they think they can.  The thought process they are referring to is:  "I'll have a whopper with cheese and a regular coke.  You know what, make that a diet coke and add on a large fry."

Soda's reputation is going down the toilet (literally, in some ways).  First, we find out that soda makes for brittle bones, and now it can make you fat.  I'll stick with juice, tea, water and coffee, thanks.

Fit's Tip:  For food it's everything in moderation, no matter what you put in your mouth.  A diet soda won't help in your weight loss quest if you're still getting way too many calories from other foods (not to mention the amount of artificial sweeteners you're taking in).

Burger King Breakdown

It turns out that the Home of the Whopper should probably be called Home of a Whole Lotta Calories.  However for some people Burger King just can't be avoided, so while you're there take a good look at what you're about to eat.

You should probably get the:

Tendergrill Salad with no dressing at 300 calories, 11 grams of fat, 0.5 grams trans fat, 840 mg of sodium and 17 grams of carbs.

You could also get the:

Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich with no mayo at 400 calories, 7 grams of fat, 0 grams trans fat, 1090 mg of sodium and 49 grams of carbs.

There's more so whatever you do, do NOT get the:

Double Whopper with cheese at 990 calories, 64 grams of fat, 2..5 grams of trans fat, 1520 mg of sodium and 52 grams of carbs.  (Did you know there is a TRIPLE whopper with cheese?  Yup and it measures in with a whopping 1230 calories.)

Need a side?  Well a Large French Fry has 500 calories, 28 grams of fat, 6 grams of trans fat, 820 mg of sodium and 57 grams of carbs.

Whereas the Side Garden Salad has 15 calories, 0 grams of fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 0 mg of sodium and 3 grams of carbs.
