Burn More Calories on the Treadmill

Bad weather can't get in the way of your treadmill runs!  That's what's so great about running inside.  But if you've hit a plateau with your workouts or you're not losing as much weight as you think you should, follow these calorie-burning tips the next time you hop on the moving belt.

Bring Hills Indoors

Pumping up the incline will not only help prevent shin splints, but it also tones your tush, thighs, and calves while burning extra calories.  After a 30-minute workout at a 10-minute-per-mile pace, you'll burn 270 calories with no incline, 363 with a five percent incline, 420 with a 10 percent incline, and 482 with a 15 percent incline (crazy steep, I know).

Slow and Steady Doesn't Always Win the Race

On long, slow runs when you need to take it easy, it's great to travel along at a consistent pace.  But during your intense workouts, take advantage of intervals.  By alternating between running a few minutes at a moderate pace and throwing in sprinting bursts, you'll end up burning more calories, building your endurance, and becoming a faster, stronger runner.  Not to mention, intervals have also been proven to fight belly fat.

I Think I Can, I Think I Can

Whether you prefer chugging along at a consistent speed or doing intervals, to get the most out of your workouts, you've got to make continued progress.  One way to do that is to gradually increase your speed.  Don't jump from 10-minute miles to eight-minute kilometres because you could seriously hurt yourself.  Instead increase your pace just slightly so your body has time to adjust.

Compete Against Friends (or Strangers)

If you hit the gym with a buddy, do your workouts on side-by-side treadmills.  You can use one another's energy for motivation to run faster or longer than you would if you were alone.  If you're at the gym solo, find a stranger on a treadmill to secretly race with.

No Need to Hold On For Dear Life

You should be moving at a pace that's fast enough to get your heart and muscles working, but not so speedy that you have to hold on in order to prevent falling.  When you release your grasp of the handles, it allows you to swing your arms, which will not only burn more calories, but will also tone your core and upper body.  Holding on can also contribute to bad posture, which can lead to back and shoulder pain.

Top Fitness Hashtags 2016

Were your friends #gettingswole and #countingmacros this year?  They were on Instagram!  We took a look at the past year of fitness and health Instagram trends (and our own Instagram feeds) to bring you the 10 standouts from 2016 — rising stars and returning vets included.

Here are the top tags that took over your feed this past year, including the most important days of the week like #TransformationTuesday and #CelluliteSaturday.

#MealPrep and #MealPrepSunday

Both #MealPrep and #MealPrepSunday were huge this year.  While general meal prep amassed over 4 million tags this year, the rising star was meal prep Sunday as more and more fans of the healthy habit have dedicated a chunk of their weekend as a designated day of prep.

#MondayMotivation

Well, #MondayMotivation doesn't seem to be slowing down, and we don't mind.  With over 3 million posts, this year had us more motivated than ever.  On Mondays.

#TransformationTuesday

Perhaps the biggest star of 2016, #TransformationTuesday has garnered over 10 million photos on the tag, complete with stunning before and after photos.

#WorkoutWednesday

Let's just keep this day of the week thing going, shall we?  Though we haven't yet figured out what Thursday and Friday will stand for (#ThickThighsThursday?  #FitFriday?  Unclear.), it is certain that Wednesdays are for workouts.  #WorkoutWednesday is still in the under-1-million club, but is trending up this year; we expect it to continue all through 2017.

#CelluliteSaturday

At first glance, you might think #CelluliteSaturday is something around body shaming or thinspo.  To everyone's delighted surprise, it's actually the opposite — it's an empowering, body-positive tag aimed at celebrating "flaws".  Now we just have to figure out what to post on Thursday and Friday.

#FlexibleDieting / #IIFYM

You didn't expect to see doughnuts on this list, did you?  Well, with the rising popularity of macros comes the increased popularity of flexible dieting and the IIFYM (if it fits your macros) concept.  The #FlexibleDieting tag is up to 2.5 million photos, while #IIFYM is at 6.5 million.

#FitGirlProbs

Ah, the art of commiserating on Instagram.  #FitGirlProbs lets us all vent our frustrations and share our hilarious follies of living that fit life — with photos.  This rising star is picking up steam thanks to fitness stars like Cassey Ho making it a regular tag.

#SelfCare

If you felt like 2016 was the year of self-care, you're not alone.  With over 1 million shared photos, it's clear that #SelfCare is more important to people than ever.

#Fitspo

Popular for years but picking up massive traction in 2016 is #Fitspo.  The tag continues to be a source of inspiration with over 35 million shared photos.

#EatClean

Another ultra-popular tag that continued to be used in 2016:  #EatClean.  With nearly 36 million pictures, you're bound to get some off-colour ones, but for the most part it's clean, clean eats.  For a somewhat safer browsing experience, check out specific clean eating accounts like @EatCleanOK and @clean_eating_alice.

Eddie Hall Deadlifts Two People

Eddie Hall is the third strongest man in the entire world, but after shocking us with his beyond-impressive lifting videos, we're left wondering who could possibly be stronger than him?!  The 28-year-old self-proclaimed "Beast" recently posted the video above, bench pressing two people (which appears to be between 300 and 400 pounds), but apparently that's nothing.  Eddie's Instagram bio rightfully boasts that he holds the world record for heaviest weight ever deadlifted at 500KG (over 1100 pounds).  Not only does Eddie so kindly re-rack his weights, but the fact that he's able to handle the unbalanced humans is unlike anything we've ever seen before.  We hope they weren't his spotters!
