Endometriosis Overview

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue lining the uterus (endometrium), spreads and grows in areas outside the uterus, such as in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, bowels and bladder. Although the cause is not entirely clear, medical professionals suggest that endometriosis is linked to family history, retrograde menstruation, and a troublesome immune system.

Endometriosis is the spreading of endometrial tissues to areas outside of the uterus, such as the ovaries (endometrioma), bladder, rectum, and peritoneum (lining of the abdominal cavity).

Results show that 10.8 million women were affected by endometriosis in 2015, and it is most common in those who are in their thirties upwards. However, it can appear in young girls about to enter puberty or teenagers. Although there are common symptoms, including painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea), heavy periods (menorrhagia), painful sex (dysmenorrhea), and more, about 25% of women have no symptoms at all. Because some cases show no signs or symptoms, many women do not get treated. This can lead to such consequences as symptom occurrence, further development of endometriosis and infertility. Women may even go years without ever receiving a proper diagnosis of their pain and symptoms.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

70% of endometriosis pain occurs during menstruation, although pain can exist outside of a woman’s period. Main symptoms of endometriosis include heavy periods (menorrhagia), painful periods (dysmenorrhea), pelvic pain, painful sex (dyspareunia), fatigue and pain or discomfort when going to the bathroom. It can also cause infertility or problems trying to get pregnant. For some women, endometriosis can stop normal, everyday activities, and after some time, psychological problems can arise such as depression and anxiety.

If you are experiencing any of the above issues, make sure to contact your doctor and make an appointment; your doctor can then refer you to a gynecologist.

If your gynecologist is concerned for endometriosis, they most often will advise preliminary treatment options such as anti-inflammatory painkillers and contraceptives. This is done in order to alleviate patient symptoms. However, not only is this not a definitive treatment for the disease itself, but it also does not provide a formal diagnosis and confirmation of endometriosis. The definitive way to treat endometriosis is through laparoscopic surgery, accompanied by a pathology report in order to provide a formal diagnosis.

Dr. Tamer Seckin of the Seckin Endometriosis Center surgically treats endometriosis in the form of laparoscopic deep-excision of endometriosis, including bowel endometriosis. His tertiary referral center works with patients on a personalized level to fully understand each patient’s case so that a proper treatment plan can be decided.

How Diet Can Help

Following a surgery and often pre-surgery, your doctor may recommend a change in lifestyle and diet as a complementary way to reduce endometriosis symptoms, mainly in cases of bowel endometriosis. In bowel endometriosis, lesions attach to the outer walls of the intestines and can cause such symptoms as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and pain when passing a bowel movement (constipation). For this reason, bowel endometriosis can often be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other similar gastrointestinal diseases. Nevertheless, these similar symptoms can be played to the physician and patient advantage, by using similar GI treatment measures for bowel endometriosis diets. Hence, why certain diets are often recommended. On top of this, like any other condition, diet can affect how you feel. Although there is a lack of research on how diet can affect your endometriosis symptoms specifically, some foods can help you naturally control hormones, while other foods can have a negative impact.

Patients with bowel endometriosis, which often masks itself as IBS, will often be advised to take up a specific in order to relieve such symptoms as diarrhea, constipation, nausea and vomiting.

Before changing your diet however it is recommended that you consult your doctor and enlist the help and advice of a professional nutritionist.

How a Professional Can Help

Endometriosis can be difficult to live with, however, there are many professionals out there ready to help you live with this condition. Whether it is a doctor giving surgery options, a nutritionist providing an anti-inflammatory diet plan or a group of individuals also suffering from endometriosis and engaging in a help group, there are knowledgeable individuals available to help. You are not alone in this fight, and that is always something to try and always keep in mind.

There are a million and one diets out there, from the cabbage soup diet to the Atkins diet, every single one of them purports to be the key to easy weight loss. The truth is that weight loss is never easy. Many men and women struggle for years to lose weight, spending their life on a seesaw of weight loss and weight gain.

Sustained Weight Loss

Sustained weight loss requires a comprehensive approach and a number of major lifestyle changes. There is no point cutting your calorific intake to the bone for three months, only to return to your previous lifestyle once the weight has dropped off. You will soon gain the weight back again – and then some!

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to stick to a healthy diet and take regular exercise. Eating healthily means cutting out certain ingredients, so in theory, moving to a gluten-free diet could aid weight loss, but you may find it doesn’t work that way.

Gluten-Free Celebrities

Gluten-free diets have become increasingly popular. Many famous celebrities swear by a gluten-free diet. Gwyneth Paltrow famously educates the public about gluten-free and dairy-free living on her lifestyle blog, Goop. Russell Crowe turned to a GF diet back in 2011 when he was training for his role in Gladiator. He told the media he lost 16 pounds on the diet. Ryan Gosling, Zooey Deschanel, Rachel Weisz, and Bill Clinton are all gluten-free, too.

Are You Allergic to Gluten?

Most people elect to switch to a gluten-free diet because they suffer from IBS, celiac or inflammatory bowel disease. Gluten is a major irritant and is a known cause of IBS, as well as celiac disease. You can find effective IBS relief medication, but dealing with the underlying cause can also provide long-term relief. If you have celiac disease going gluten-free is not an option, but not everyone who eats a gluten-free diet is intolerant or allergic to gluten.

Removing gluten from your diet involves cutting out bread, cakes, biscuits, cereals, and anything with wheat, flour, and grains in it. On the face of it, this is an excellent way to cut down on calories, since bread, cakes, and baked goods are notoriously high in calories.

However, what you need to be aware of is that replacing gluten-containing foods with gluten-free substitutes could actually make your weight problem worse.

The Dangers of Mass-Produced GF Foods

Gluten-free foods are more readily available than they were ten years ago. Most supermarkets sell a good range of gluten-free bread, biscuits, convenience foods, and other groceries. They often look – and taste – identical to the real thing, but what manufacturers do is add lots of sugar to make the food taste more palatable.

Cutting out bread, cakes, pasta, and other carbohydrate-rich foods is not a bad thing, but replacing them with sugar-laden substitutes will not help you lose weight. You can cut out gluten, but make sure you fill the gap with freshly cooked vegetables and healthy foods instead.

Balance is always an important element to maintain in life. Whether you’re trying to stay healthy, have more stamina and strength, or you simply want to have better emotional well-being, maintaining a balanced life will take you a step closer to your goals. Many of the resources you can find here on Herbal Nutrition also rely on having a balanced life.

There are plenty of ways to achieve and maintain a balanced life. In this article, however, we’re going to focus on the steps and activities you can actively engage in order to have a more balanced life. Let’s have a look, shall we?

Nurture Yourself

You can’t have a balanced life without taking good care of yourself. A lot of people make the mistake of caring for others first and neglecting their own body and mind. This may seem like a good idea at first. Helping others is always a good thing, right? Well, not really. It won’t be long before you start feeling tired and pressured.

Always listen to your body. You can avoid burnout by allocating enough time for leisure activities or for resting. You can also maintain good stamina and overall performance through regular exercise and fun activities. On the other hand, meditating or reading can help you regain focus and keep the mind fresh and ready.

Nurture Others

After taking good care of yourself, it is time to find rewards in helping others.

Start making conscious decisions to help those who need assistance and experience the difference. There are even those who decide to make a career switch to healthcare or other fields so that nurturing others becomes an integral part of their lives; you too can make the same decision.

A pediatric nursing practitioner is a superb example of a rewarding career, both financially and emotionally. There are several reasons why this field is perfect. For starters, universities such as Maryville University now lets you pursue pediatric nurse practitioner degrees online. Next, you’ll be working with children and their parents. Of course, the different pediatric nurse practitioner specialties also present many career options to choose from.

Stay Positive

I understand how cliché this may sound, but staying positive works and it is not as difficult as you think. You are allowed to feel sad, angry or emotional when facing situations that require you to feel that way. That’s actually part of having a well-balanced life. At the end of every day, however, you can choose to be positive.

Ending your day with a positive thought can be as simple as remembering the three things that you are grateful for during that day. Start the next day with another positive thought. This is a very simple routine to get into, but it will lead you to a better, less stressful life from day one.

Having and maintaining a balanced life is not as difficult as you think. You just have to decide to take the necessary steps, make the right changes, and introduce new routines that will help you stay in control regardless of the situation you are in.

Alcohol tends to draw a varied set of opinions from medical experts and general society. There are religions that forbid alcohol completely, and there are people who choose to abstain for health purposes or even because they simply don’t like the taste or the effects of alcohol. However, a large section of the adult population does enjoy a drink or two.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that an estimated 88,000 people die each year from alcohol-related causes, and it is the fourth highest preventable cause of death in the US. This goes to show exactly how serious the health implications of alcohol are. In the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the amount of alcohol that is classed as moderate is 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks per day for men. So if you are going above these guidelines, then you are obviously more at risk to some of the health issues linked to alcohol intake.

As well as physical health problems, alcohol can lead to other problems. Alcohol is a depressant and can lead to mental health issues or mood swings for days after consuming alcohol. It can also lead to people making decisions that they would not normally make if they were sober, or can make people more aggressive and argumentative.

In terms of motor vehicle deaths each year, a third of them involved a driver that was impaired by alcohol so getting behind the wheel after a drink is a serious killer and shouldn’t be contemplated. If you do find yourself in a position where you have made such a decision and have been arrested for DUI, then you should seek the help of a Seattle DUI lawyer such as tromboldlaw.com. Some people do unfortunately get tempted to drive after a drink, and in some cases, they aren’t aware that they have too much alcohol in their blood.

The legal limit for driving is 80mg for every 100ml of blood, which allows for only a very small intake of alcohol, so if you are in any doubt at all just don’t do it. Nobody wants to put somebody’s life at risk, but sometimes alcohol has the power to impair people’s decision-making.

Other effects of alcohol include aging and weight gain, so if you want to stay looking young and fit then alcohol is best avoided especially if you are likely to drink large amounts of alcohol. Alcohol like lager has large numbers of calories and while you can get drinks that are lower in calories, but find that you haven’t eaten much, your weight gain could be down to your alcohol intake. Therefore, if you want to lose weight, cutting out alcohol is a sure way to see results if you are a regular drinker.

In moderation, many people can enjoy alcohol, and it can be fun to drink in a social environment, but if you are drinking more than the recommended amounts, then you should try and make some lifestyle changes before it is too late.

When you go to work, you should be secure in the knowledge that your employer is taking responsibility for ensuring that you are safe in the workplace. The OSHA was introduced to protect employees and to prevent fatalities in the workplace. Unfortunately, over the last few years, workplace deaths have risen from 4585 in 2013 to 4821 in 2104 and then further to 4836 in 2015.

These statistics highlight just how important it is to ensure you are safe and your health isn’t jeopardized in your working environment. Regardless of what industry you work in, it is your right to be protected. You may work in an office, a shop or operate heavy machinery on a construction site but you are still entitled to be kept safe at work.

If you have suffered an injury whether in the workplace or outside of work, you should find out about your rights. From traffic accidents to medical malpractice, you could be entitled to compensation for someone else’s negligence so you should speak to personal injury lawyers phillipslawoffices.com for some advice.

Office workers can be more affected by their environment than they actually realize, and while there may be a relatively low number of serious injuries in an office environment, you can still incur long-term problems. For example, if your posture is bad when you are sitting at your desk, this can lead to future back and neck problems that may never go away. If you are concerned about your posture, then you should get an assessment of your desk and equipment. You may be provided with a supportive chair or maybe have your PC height adjusted to prevent you from crouching over.

What you may see as an insignificant and infrequent pain can soon turn into a long-term health problem so be as vigilant as you can be when it comes to health concerns in the workplace.

Lighting and screen glare can also cause problems. If you find that you are getting headaches from staring at a computer screen all day, then there are a few things that you can do. You can order a specialized screen that reduces glare, request a larger monitor or increase the size of any documents that you are working on. Always go for regular eye tests, and if you are getting headaches, it is a clear indication that something is wrong.

Taking a break away from your screen is also important so even if you are rushing to get a project finished, always try and have a regular break to give your eyes a rest from staring at the screen. Once you feel the impact of injuries, it is difficult to fix them, so that is why it is important to prevent them from happening in the first place. The OSHA is in place to keep you protected in work and to give advice if you should ever need it. Remember, it is your right to be safe in any workplace, whether that is your own or you are in someone else’s premises.

It is not a secret that herbal supplements are considered better – and healthier – than their chemical-based, artificial counterparts. The lack of chemical substances in herbal supplements allow the body to absorb all the nutrients it needs without having to deal with side effects. According to the University of Southern California and its study of gerontology, supplements, combined with healthy lifestyle and better diets, are actually prolonging the life expectancy of people in America.

The latest studies suggest that one in ten girls born today will live past the age of 100. The average life expectancy of females increases quite substantially, from 78 years in 2012 to 81 years today. For men, the life expectancy is currently at around 76 years. Now that we have more herbal supplements being discovered and manufactured, experts believe that the life expectancy of Americans will continue to increase in the coming years.

If you’ve been working hard in your online master in liberal studies program, you’ll want to make sure that your brain is firing on all cylinders when it’s time to take to take those all-important exams. By taking a few simple steps you can ensure that your mind is clear, calm and focused, so that you’ll be able to recall information with ease and organize your thoughts effectively.

Don’t Skimp on Sleep

Did you know that being sleep deprived is as bad as being drunk? Researchers have found that going without sleep for 17 hours affects performance to the same degree as having a blood alcohol level of 0.05 percent. That’s almost as high as the 0.08 percent that puts you over the legal drink drive limit in most states.

Pulling late night study sessions before you take crucial exams is the worst thing that you can do if you want your mind to be sharp.

Fuel Your Body with Protein and Healthy Fats

Have you heard of the carbohydrate crash? It’s the energy slump that hits when blood sugar levels plummet an hour or two after a carb heavy meal or snack. Sugar is an obvious culprit, but foods like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes have the same effect.

To keep energy levels high, opt for meals and snacks rich in protein and healthy fats. Choose foods like eggs, poultry, avocados, almonds and hummus.

Swap Coffee for Green Tea

The caffeine in coffee is a great stimulant; it helps to improve focus and keeps you alert when energy levels are low, but those benefits come with some costs. It’s well known that caffeine increases anxiety, it does this by raising the levels of two stress hormones, cortisol and epinephrine.

When stress hormones are coursing through your system, your heart beats faster, your blood pressure shoots up, and you’re likely to be more agitated. Caffeine also inhibits a really important neurotransmitter in your brain called GABA. GABA is responsible for keeping you calm, and low levels are associated with anxiety and panic attacks.

So how do you get the upsides of caffeine without the downsides? Simple, you swap coffee for green tea. Green tea has enough caffeine to give you an energy boost and sharpen your focus, and because it’s released into your bloodstream more slowly you won’t have to worry about the caffeine buzz caffeine crash cycle.

Green tea brings some other benefits too:

  • Theophylline and Theobromine both relax muscles and increase blood flow. More blood flow to your brain means more oxygen, which keeps you alert, and relaxed muscles mean less tension.
  • L-Theanine is an amino acid that reduces both mental and physical stress, keeping you calm and steady.

Put it all together and you have a gentle stimulant that produces the kind of calm focus that is perfect for obtaining your online master in liberal studies degree.

By taking a little extra care of yourself at exam time you won’t add to the natural anxiety that’s bound to be to present, you’ll be sharp and energized, and you’ll be ready for whatever questions come your way.

Everyone has experienced the occasional odd sleepless night, complete with tossing and turning. Unfortunately, for some people, it isn’t so odd but rather insists on being part of their routine. However, there are many possible solutions to this problem, including the benefits of a natural hormone known as melatonin. Not only does the human brain make it, but in minimal amounts it is also found in plants and animals. So keep in mind–while melatonin may help you sleep, it is not a man-made sleep aid.

Does Melatonin Work?

Whether or not the intentional consumption of melatonin assists sleep often depends on the individual and the reason they need or want it. However, the onslaught of sleeplessness frequently comes from the production of melatonin being disturbed, either being in an unconventional release pattern or there not being enough of it. When melatonin is released or repressed is dictated by circadian rhythms and exposure to light, so if your body is flung into a different time zone (jet lag), or if you hold a night job, your sleep being under the control of when your body is used to experiencing daylight may be less than ideal.

Jet lag is when a person travels to different time zones, generally by plane. In some cases, the time difference may only be a few hours and this is hardly an issue. However, once it becomes a notable shift it may take your body an inconvenient amount of time to re-adjust (approximately a day for every time zone crossed) and make it difficult to sleep or stay awake at appropriate times. However, that’s where melatonin comes in. If taken at the right time, supplements can ease the adjustment period by raising melatonin levels and thus make you tired.

Benefits of Melatonin

As already harped upon, the major benefit of melatonin supplements, when used correctly, is sleep. There are numerous other uses being researched (such as helping with Alzheimer’s) but you should consult your doctor before using it regularly to help treat something.

Melatonin Safety

Taking melatonin can sometimes interact badly with medications and health problems, so either do your research or consult your doctor! Long-term use (over two months) is also heavily discouraged without the consultation of a doctor. It sometimes comes with side effects, so don’t be too alarmed if you wake up with: headaches, dizziness, daytime sleepiness, and in less common cases discomfort, irritability, confusion, etc. and even short-term feelings of depression. It also should be noted that melatonin often brings vivid dreams or nightmares. Regarding dosage, taking too much has not been shown to be even remotely harmful, it can disrupt circadian rhythms, which is rather inconvenient. Finally, do not operate machinery or drive a vehicle within five hours of taking melatonin supplements. The very idea of taking melatonin supplements is to make you drowsy.

The diagnosis of heart disease tends to be accompanied by a rather weighty problem: obesity. It’s regarded as one of the major signs that you may develop heart disease or that your current diagnosis of heart disease may worsen substantially into conditions like congestive heart failure.

How Does Weight Contribute to Heart Disease?

In the updated 2014 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics report published by the American Heart Association (AHA), several startling factors were published pertaining to poor behaviors that led to heart disease. Poor diet and a lack of exercise were major contributors to individuals developing heart disease.

The point to understand about these two activities is that they tend to correlate with a higher-than-healthy weight. A sedentary lifestyle tends to be coupled with a poor diet, which leads to both heart disease and obesity.

Even in individuals not suffering from heart disease, the presence of obesity is considered one of the major risk factors for developing heart disease. This is because of how the two aforementioned factors tend to work hand-in-hand.

For example, an obese person may have difficulty exercising. They may find aerobic activities especially difficult, which then means that they may skip them altogether. This allows their heart to become weaker.

Obese individuals tend to consume more calories from calorie-dense foods that may have a higher amount of saturated fats or simple carbohydrates. These promote conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and other conditions that directly contribute to heart disease.

For an individual diagnosed with heart disease, obesity can significantly worsen their prognosis. It can prevent them from reaping the benefits of exercise, receiving the nutrients their body needs to repair itself, and promoting the formation of more fat storage while muscle tissue begins to atrophy as the body cannibalizes it.

This starts a vicious cycle that makes treating heart disease even more difficult.

Obesity Contributing to Other Heart Disease Risks

Being overweight contributes to other factors that can lead to heart disease or make heart disease worse.

Obesity tends to develop in tandem with high blood pressure. This forces the heart to pump more blood, which in turn increases the incidence of blood platelets sticking to the walls of arteries and veins and increases the risk for a person to suffer heart attacks or strokes.

Another set of factors that tend to develop with obesity are known as metabolic disorders. Conditions like diabetes change how the body’s chemistry works, which in turn makes it harder for exercise to be efficient. These conditions can lead to further complications like diabetic neuropathy and a difficulty in blood flow reaching the extremities like the hands and feet.

How Can You Improve Your Heart Health Through Weight Loss?

The good news is that losing weight is one of the most effective ways to promote heart health while fighting the myriad of factors that can make your prognosis worse.

Below are three simple tips that can help you lose weight, improve your life expectancy, and reduce the number of heart-related problems that you might develop in the future.

  1. Eat Wholesome Foods

Packaged snacks and preserved foods tend to be lined with carbohydrates, simple fats and a distinct lack of fiber.

Substituting natural foods like fruits and vegetables can dramatically benefit your heart. You can switch to leaner portions of beef or chicken to further promote a healthy diet that helps your heart.

The best part is that foods that naturally have fiber tend to be metabolized slower by the body. This leaves you feeling full for a longer period after eating, which means that you are less prone to consuming more calories and gaining excess weight.

  1. Exercise Regularly

Developing an exercise routine doesn’t have to be hard. Something as simple as routinely walking around your block for half an hour every day can dramatically improve how well your heart functions.

As you exercise regularly, your body will tend to use energy stored in fat cells rather than breaking down lean muscle mass for energy. This can reduce your weight while making your cardiovascular system stronger and lowering your blood pressure.

  1. Work with Your Physician

The cause of obesity isn’t always clear. There can be extenuating factors that make it hard to lose weight. Hormone levels are a prime example of one thing that can cause an otherwise healthy person to gain excess weight.

The best way to combat these factors is to work with your physician. Be honest with him or her about your diet and exercise habits while working with your physician to develop a personalized fitness plan with any medical treatment you might need to succeed.

When you begin to lose weight, your body will function better. You may even be able to alleviate some of the damage that has been caused and reduce the symptoms of any heart disease that may already be present.

  1. Get Extra Help

Sometimes it’s hard to know what food is good or bad for you.  In some instances, you might benefit from a meal replacement shake or food like HerbaLife Shakes that combine all the nutrients, vitamins, and protein you need to keep you full and healthy. HerbaLife supplements healthy eating and regular exercise to promote weight loss, which is vital for a healthy heart.

herbalife-transformationsIn the United States and much of the northern hemisphere, September means Autumn and “back to school”. It’s also a time of new beginnings. There’s nothing better than a fresh start and a clean slate. And so it is with Herbalife. Fall is a great time to reconnect with your customers and get them back on the program. Our routines are returning to “normal” and this is a great time to take a look at your business and get started again, with Herbalife and with Herbal Nutrition.

And speaking of “new beginnings”, some of you have emailed us regarding Herbalife’s rule “Retail Websites: U.S. and Canada” which relates to online retailing, and what it means for Herbal Nutrition. There’s no doubt, September 15th will bring some changes to Herbal Nutrition, but we are confident that there’s never been a better time to use Herbal Nutrition for your Herbalife Independent Distributorship!

Retail Websites: U.S. and Canada

If you didn’t see the announcement, effective September 15th, 2014, distributors in the United States and Canada must retail exclusively through GoHerbalife. Here’s the section that will affect your Herbal Nutrition account:

Member Websites

All Members who use the Internet to sell products for delivery in the United States and Canada must do so exclusively through the GoHerbalife platform. Links or redirects from other sites are also not permitted.

In summary, if your customers are going to pay and checkout online, that needs to be done through your goHerbalife account. Online retail is now in the domain of goHerbalife exclusively for distributors in the USA and Canada. However, Herbalife still does permit you to run your own independent website. I’ll include the relevant rules at the end of this post, but the most recent Rules of Conduct (6149-US-31 Rev. 05/14) make it clear that you may do the following:

  • Advertise in Directories (Rule 6.2.9)
  • Use an independent website (Rule 7.2.1)
  • Use third party websites for advertising and promotion (Rule 7.2.4)

Therefore, your Herbal Nutrition account can easily remain compliant with Herbalife’s new retailing rule by simply disabling the online checkout ability. This will still allow you to obtain customer leads from our directory, and then follow up with the customer personally to complete the sale and complete payment. In fact, we will make this process even easier through the use of the new Herbal Nutrition invoicing tool, which will allow you to create a custom program for a new or existing customer, and then easily collect the payment for this order. Direct invoicing (similar to what is offered by Paypal and Propay) is not prohibited by the new rule, and can be an effective tool for collecting payment from your customers.

More than Retailing!

Herbal Nutrition has always been about much more than retailing. We will be working with you to bring your site into compliance with all of Herbalife’s rules by September 15th, but you’ll continue to have access to the following features:

  • The Herbal Nutrition distributor directory
  • Wellness evaluation
  • Recipes
  • Testimonials
  • Herbal Office
  • Work from Home System
  • LoseBig
  • Direct customer invoicing

Thank you for your continued use of Herbal Nutrition! We’re here to help you through this transition and will do everything we can to help you market Herbalife’s fantastic products around the world!

Regards,

Mark Hall and Kevin Smith
